Maryam Nawaz’s Election as Chief Minister of Punjab
Maryam Nawaz has been elected as the Chief Minister of Punjab through a joint candidacy by the PML-N and its allies, marking the first time in the country’s history for a woman to hold this position. Following the conclusion of the vote count by the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Maryam Nawaz secured 220 votes, securing her position as Chief Minister. However, due to the opposition’s boycott and walkouts, Rana Afzal failed to secure any votes. With the Speaker’s announcement, Maryam Nawaz assumed leadership of the house.
Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan convened the session of the Punjab Assembly. While the PML-N nominated Maryam Nawaz, the PTI nominated Rana Afzal Khan for the position of Chief Minister of Punjab. Additionally, two more members of the Punjab Assembly, Sardar Khizar Hussain Mazari and Taher Qaisrani, took the oath today. Taher Qaisrani joined the PPP, while Sardar Khizar Mazari joined the Muslim League-N.

Maryam Nawaz’s Inclusive Message to the Punjab Assembly
In her opening address to the Punjab Assembly, Maryam Nawaz, the newly elected Chief Minister of Punjab, stated, “My office, heart, and chamber doors are open for the opposition 24/7. Just as I am the Chief Minister of the League, I am also your Chief Minister.”
She further added, “I am grateful to my opponents for enduring hardships without holding any official position and for standing by my father in jail. It is because of them that I am so resilient today.
The date today marks a proud moment for every woman in Pakistan. To those who voted for me, I am their Chief Minister; to those who didn’t, I am still their Chief Minister.
I regret the absence of opposition members in the assembly session. I thank Allah for blessing me with this success.
The government’s role is not to engage in business; its role is solely to formulate policies. As a mother, my dream is that no child in Punjab should be out of school due to a lack of resources.
